Supportive Recovery Housing

Supportive Recovery Housing at Vancouver Island Therapeutic Community (VITC) and 2nd Stage Recovery Housing

Supportive Recovery Housing recognizes the need for holistic and affordable clean and sober recovery housing. VITC is a residential therapeutic community program for adult males to have the opportunity to affect positive change in their lives. The facility is strategically located in central Nanaimo on Vancouver Island and has access to city transportation, recreation centers, and shopping malls. VITC offers residential housing with a right living model that allows residents to reintegrate back into the larger community with support. There is no time limit for length of stay as we recognize that longer-term programming can produce enhanced recovery outcomes. When appropriate, residents are encouraged to extend their stay in the program until they are ready for independent living.

The program offers safe and affordable housing, daily programming, work experience, life skills training, connection to other community supports and resources, counselling, case management, and three prepared meals daily. VITC continues to evolve and adapt to meet the needs and care of its’ residents. We have partnered with many agencies to deliver a rounded program of teaching, health, and safety. Double-occupancy rooms and home-cooked meals create a friendly family atmosphere. Camaraderie among the residents offers support and a sense of belonging. We encourage individuality and support residents to be productive members of society. Special community events and celebrations also help develop a strong therapeutic alliance between residents, families, friends, and staff.

2nd Stage Recovery Housing

Residents have the option to apply to our second stage housing, following residency in Supportive Recovery (VITC) with support of program staff.  Residents supported in this transition will have demonstrated stability, leadership and independence within the community.  The resident will be actively engaged in daily programming, case management planning and role modelling right living practices.

2nd Stage Recovery Housing is short term, usually 3 to 8 months.  During their stay, we help to support the individual in strengthening their recovery, and continuing to develop the skills they need to live a successful, independent life.  We continue to connect our residents with community resources, including AA and NA meetings, drug and alcohol counselling and volunteer opportunities.  Residents will work one-on-one with an Addictions Worker to help strengthen their recovery plan and to support with educational and career goals as needed.
